Ogni domenica e martedì, le guardie entrano nelle celle dei prigionieri palestinesi, li ammanettano e li picchiano con i manganelli. Questa è il loro compito settimanale, secondo i prigionieri rilasciati (Hagar Shezaf, Haaretz, 9 dicembre). Dall’inizio della guerra, il 7 ottobre, sono morti quattro prigionieri, quasi certamente a causa delle percosse. Diciannove guardie che hanno partecipato a queste feste malate sono sotto inchiesta, sospettate di aver causato la morte di un prigioniero.
Centinaia di palestinesi detenuti nella Striscia di Gaza sono stati tenuti legati e bendati 24 ore al giorno e sono stati brutalmente picchiati. Alcuni, forse la maggior parte, non hanno alcun legame con Hamas. Alcuni di loro – nessuno si è preoccupato di riferire quanti – sono morti in prigionia nella base di Sde Teiman.
Anche i circa 4.000 lavoratori gazani arrestati in Israele il 7 ottobre, nonostante non avessero fatto nulla di male, sono detenuti in condizioni disumane. Almeno due di loro sono morti. E si è già scritto abbastanza sui detenuti denudati e sulle loro fotografie umilianti.
In questa terribile competizione sulla grandezza del male, non ci sono vincitori, ma solo perdenti. Ma è impossibile parlare giorno e notte delle atrocità di Hamas – gli scrittori fanno a gara a chi riesce a coniare i termini più sprezzanti per l’organizzazione – ignorando completamente il male di Israele.
Non ci sono vincitori, ma solo perdenti, nella competizione su quanto sangue viene versato e come viene versato. Ma è impossibile ignorare l’orribile quantità di sangue sparso nella Striscia di Gaza. Questo fine settimana sono state uccise circa 400 persone in due giorni, la maggior parte delle quali bambini. Sabato ho visto le immagini del weekenda Al-Bureij e Nuseirat, compresi i bambini che stavano morendo sul pavimento dell’ospedale Al-Aqsa di Deir al-Balah, e sono orribili.
Il rifiuto di Israele di aumentare la quantità di aiuti umanitari in entrata a Gaza, in barba a una decisione del Consiglio di Sicurezza delle Nazioni Unite, testimonia analogamente una politica del male.
E come se tutto questo non bastasse, le voci del male all’interno di Israele hanno alzato il livello delle proposte sataniche. Il giornalista Zvi Yehezkeli è favorevole all’uccisione di 100.000 gazawi con un solo attacco. Il generale maggiore della riserva Giora Eiland ci ha ripensato ed è passato dalla proposta fatta in un primo tempo di diffondere malattie a Gaza a quella di affamare i suoi abitanti.
Persino il nuovo principe azzurro della sinistra, Yair Golan, che attualmente sta conquistando 12 seggi alla Knesset nei sondaggi tra coloro che si considerano i bellissimi israeliani, ha detto ai gazawi in un’intervista al quotidiano Yedioth Ahronoth che “per quanto ci riguarda, potete morire di fame. È del tutto legittimo”.
Eppure, dopo tutto questo, consideriamo Hamas l’unico mostro della zona, il suo leader l’unico psicotico e, solo il modo in cui tiene in ostaggio gli israeliani, disumano.
È impossibile non essere inorriditi al pensiero della sorte dei nostri ostaggi, in particolare dei malati e degli anziani. Ma è anche impossibile non essere inorriditi dalla sorte dei palestinesi che abbiamo tenuto legati e bendati per settimane e mesi.
Israele non ha il diritto di stabilire standard di malvagità quando anche le sue mani sono macchiate di malvagità. Dimenticate le uccisioni, la fame e gli sfollamenti di massa. Il nostro trattamento dei prigionieri palestinesi avrebbe dovuto turbare particolarmente gli israeliani, se non altro per il pericolo che corrono gli israeliani detenuti da Hamas. Cosa penserà un membro di Hamas che tiene in ostaggio un israeliano quando saprà che i suoi compagni vengono trattenuti e picchiati incessantemente?
Possiamo concludere con cautela che almeno alcuni degli israeliani detenuti da Hamas sono trattati meglio dei palestinesi detenuti da Israele. Quando venerdì sera gli ostaggi liberati Chen e Agam Goldstein hanno raccontato a Channel 12 News del trattamento riservato loro da Hamas e di come i loro carcerieri li abbiano protetti con i loro stessi corpi durante gli attacchi aerei israeliani, sono stati attaccati a gran voce sui social media. Come osano dire la verità?
Hamas ha perpetrato un attacco barbaro il 7 ottobre. Ha ucciso e rapito indiscriminatamente. Non ci sono parole per descrivere la sua brutalità, anche nel tenere in ostaggio per mesi decine di anziani, malati e bambini in condizioni insopportabilmente dure.
Ma questo rende legittimo per noi agire in modo simile? Dimenticate la moralità. La brutalità di Israele in guerra e nelle carceri servirà a far progredire i suoi obiettivi? Hamas libererà più velocemente i suoi ostaggi se Israele maltratta i palestinesi che tiene in ostaggio?

Every Sunday and Tuesday, guards enter Palestinian prisoners’ cells, handcuff them and beat them with batons. That’s their weekly party, according to released prisoners (Hagar Shezaf, Haaretz, December 9). Four prisoners have died since the war began on October 7, almost certainly from beatings. Nineteen guards who participated in these sick parties are under investigation, suspected of causing one prisoner’s death.
Hundreds of Palestinians who were detained in the Gaza Strip have been kept bound and blindfolded 24 hours a day, and they have also been brutally beaten. Some, perhaps even most, have no connection to Hamas. Some of them – no one has even bothered reporting how many – have died in captivity at the Sde Teiman base.
Some 4,000 Gazan workers who were arrested in Israel on October 7 despite having done nothing wrong are also being held in inhumane conditions. At least two of them have died. And more than enough has already been written about the detainees being stripped and the humiliating photographs.
In this terrible competition over the magnitude of evil, there are no winners, only losers. But it’s impossible to talk day and night about Hamas’ atrocities – writers vie with each other over who can coin the most derogatory terms for the organization – while completely ignoring Israel’s evil.

But it’s impossible to ignore the horrific quantity of blood that has been spilled in the Gaza Strip. This weekend, some 400 people were killed in two days, the majority of them children. On Saturday, I saw the weekend’s pictures from Al-Bureij and Nuseirat, including children dying on the floor of Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah, and they are horrifying.
Israel’s refusal to increase the amount of humanitarian aid allowed into Gaza, in defiance of a UN Security Council decision, similarly attests to a policy of evil.
And as if all this weren’t enough, the voices of evil within Israel have raised the bar on satanic proposals. Journalist Zvi Yehezkeli favors killing 100,000 Gazans in a first strike. Maj. Gen. (res.) Giora Eiland had second thoughts and switched from proposing that we spread disease in Gaza to proposing that we starve its residents.
Even the left’s new Prince Charming, Yair Golan, who is currently winning 12 Knesset seats in the polls from people who see themselves as the beautiful Israelis, told Gazans in an interview with the daily Yedioth Ahronoth that “as far as we’re concerned, you can starve to death. That’s completely legitimate.”
Yet after all this, we consider Hamas the only monster in the area, its leader the only psychotic and only the way it holds Israelis hostage as inhumane. It’s impossible not to be horrified by the thought of our hostages’ fate, particularly the sick and the elderly among them. But it’s also impossible not to be horrified by the fate of the Palestinians whom we have kept bound and blindfolded for weeks and months.
Israel has no right to set standards for evil when its hands are also stained with wickedness. Forget about the killing, the starvation and the mass displacement. Our treatment of Palestinian prisoners should have particularly upset Israelis, if only because of the danger to the Israelis held by Hamas. What will a Hamas member who holds an Israeli hostage think when he hears that his comrades are being restrained and beaten incessantly?
We can cautiously conclude that at least some of the Israelis held by Hamas are being treated better than the Palestinians held by Israel. When freed hostages Chen and Agam Goldstein told Channel 12 News on Friday night about their treatment by Hamas and how their captors protected them with their own bodies during Israeli airstrikes, they were attacked vociferously on social media. How dare they tell the truth?
Hamas perpetrated a barbaric attack on October 7. It killed and kidnapped indiscriminately. There are no words to describe its brutality, including in holding dozens of senior citizens, sick people and children hostage for months in unbearably harsh conditions.
But does this make it le- gitimate for us to act similarly? Forget about morality. Will Israel’s brutality in the war and in its jails do anything to advance its goals? Will Hamas free its hostages faster if Israel abuses the Palestinians it is holding hostage?
