Il MEND (Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) con un comunicato inviato ad Africa ExPress ha rivendicato l’assalto contro una motovedetta delle forze speciali (Joint Task Force, JTF) che stava pattugliando le acque del delta del Niger, nel ramo che congiunge Nembe a Bassanbiri nello stato di Bayelsa.
Come sottolinea anche il documento, l’attacco è di piccola portata, ma segna un ritorno del MEND alla guerriglia. I dirigenti del gruppo guerrigliero rispondono così alle affermazioni governative secondo cui l’attacco era stato organizzato da un gruppo di pirati. “Non è vero: siamo stati noi – rivendicano con orgoglio – con una nuova colonna di miliziani: i “Trainee fighter” cioè combattenti in addestramento.
“Il nostro lungo silenzio – scrivono i capi del MEND che si celano sotto lo pseudonimo di Jomo Gbomo – è dovuto a una tattica strategica: al momento opportuno ridurremo la produzione del petrolio in Nigeria a zero e cacceremo tutte le compagnie petrolifere che sfruttano la nostra terra e derubano il nostro popolo”.
“In questa nuova fase di lotta per la giustizia – conclude il documento – il MEND concentrerà la sua attenzione verso le forze governative della Nigeria che occupano il Delta del Niger e che intralciano la nostra lotta”.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) confirms that the attack on a Joint Task Force (JTF) patrol boat on Saturday January 25, 2014, in the Nembe-Bassanbiri waterways, Bayelsa State was carried out by our fighters.
This relatively insignificant attack is a reminder of our presence in the creeks of the Niger Delta and a sign of things to come. Contrary to speculations, they were not “sea pirates”, but a new group of MEND ‘Trainee fighters’.
Our silence thus far, has been strategic and at the right time, we will reduce Nigerian oil production to zero by 2015 and drive off our land, all thieving oil companies.
In this new phase of our struggle for justice, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) will pay considerable attention to dealing with the occupying Nigerian government forces in the Niger Delta that stand in our way.
