Ventisette anni fa – era il 26 settembre 1993 – in Somalia fui catturato, per la prima volta, dai miliziani somali.
Era stato abbattuto 😭 il primo elicottero 🚁 USA. Mi bloccarono in una strada e mi fecero scendere dalla mia automobile con il mio autista Ali.
Cercavano però un americano.
Erano gli unici somali che non parlavamo italiano e ci misi un po’ a far loro capire che non ero statunitense. Alla fine mi rilasciarono.

Twenty-seven years ago – it was September 26, 1993 – in Somalia I was captured for the first time by Somali militiamen.
The first US helicopter had been shot down 😭 🚁 . They blocked me in a road and made me get out of my car with my driver Ali.
But they were looking for an American.
They were the only Somalis who did not speak Italian and it took me a while to make them understand that I was not American. In the end they released me.
